Invisible Women

https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/invisible-women/

This episode is a must listen for anyone in the software industry or really designers of any kind. Not only does gender equality raise it’s ugly head in very visible ways - but in so many invisible ways as well, especially when it comes to product design. Understanding how this has been ignored (or blatantly shunned) in the past is a great lesson for embracing inclusive design for the future. It also great way to expand your view of inclusive design - it’s not just about “classic” disabilities, we really need to be designing for EVERYONE.

Discussion Questions

  1. How can gaps in data or research lead to systems that unintentionally disadvantage certain groups?

  2. What are examples of everyday designs or policies that might overlook the experiences of women?

  3. How can organizations ensure that diverse perspectives are included when designing products, policies, or services?

  4. In what ways can allies advocate for more inclusive data and decision-making processes?
