A Clash Over Inclusion at Pride

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/29/podcasts/the-daily/pride-parade-stonewall.html

Two things I really enjoyed:

  • A nice recap and personal perspective on the history of pride and Stonewall

  • A really great discussion around corporate sponsorship and pride, which I think is incredibly relevant to any working in the corporate world these days

I selected this one in particular because as much as I loved Pride 2019, it was also the first year that I felt like EVERY clothing company out there had special pride gear for sale. Were they doing it to be supportive or to make money? Or both? And is that good or bad? I think it was a fabulous discussion especially for a group like ours that works at one of said large corporations :-)

Discussion Questions

  1. How did the events at Stonewall shape the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement?

  2. What does Pride mean today compared with its origins as a protest?

  3. How can allies honor the history of Pride while supporting the ongoing work for LGBTQ+ equality?

  4. In what ways can remembering historical movements help guide present-day advocacy and allyship?
